Over the past some years, as we have seen, the most rapidly changing sector of all time is technology. This will continue to happen because nobody can really stop the technology and the point is, it should never be stopped either.
Its correctly phrased by B. F. Skinner, “The real problem is not whether machines think but whether men do”. The thing is deep and that’s what create the main foundation of any new era, Apple, Inc for instance where Steve Jobs stated “Let’s go invent tomorrow instead of worrying about what happened yesterday” and see it became the most valued incorporation of this decade.
With the passage of time, we need more growth, we need more development, we need continuous progress in our lives, and that’s what technology trying to do all over the years.
We all are familiar with the merits of it. Technology can bring a world of productivity and ease to your business, but it’s high time now, to shift our focus of approaching to the things and understand the other side as well as that it also comes with many disadvantages.
What can be the biggest drawback of technology except completely taking ourselves out of our own control over us?
If you don’t use technology wisely, it can become a constant distraction that prevents you from moving forward.
The manipulations are strong and deceptive as well as not so easy to overcome.
Let’s take the example of Social Media, all these useless trends, completely wastage of time & energy unless you’re an admin of such popular page or account. Then that’s obvious it’s not for you.
But they can be overcome by making our priorities to the things that matter most for you, let it be your education, career or job.
We have to look at the bigger picture, rather these all sorts of distractions and nonsense.
You might beg to differ and say that there is no way that quickly glimpsing at your phone to check your Facebook and Instagram can cause any serious damage. However, they are not the only culprit responsible for draining your precious time. There is social media, e-mail, online dating, online shopping, YouTube and other digital content media.
We have selected out some major digital platforms that are really killing productivity of the people.
1. Social Media Apps, Websites and App Notifications
Not used judicially, people can/do waste a lot of time using social media apps like Twitter, Facebook. In this time, it’s very easy to circulate anything to people and they will give priorities to these messages and trolls and other topics rather than their most important work.
The one solution can be to create a separate account for all social media services. So the updates don’t distract you from important work mail. Other is to keep your phone away, turn it off and create a reward system for that.
2. Instant Messengers
People conduct prolonged exchanges over instant messengers including WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, etc. As with texting, the problem is that it is usually faster to have one full conversation rather than a series of conversation snippets.
The solution to this can save instant messaging for communicating with people to those nearby. When you do send a message, keep it simple. If the conversation requires more than a few messages back-and-forth, use the phone call.
Subsequently, we see that although distraction might temporarily hinder productivity, they are also an integral part of our continued functioning. Hence we suggest to schedule breaks for such distractions so as not to interrupt your normal workflow rather keep looking your phone every time a new notifications hits.
Needless to say, the more technology pervades our lives, the shorter our attention spans will get. Therefore, don’t be too hard on yourself if you find that you’re wasting so much of time.
Instead of chastising yourself for being lured by the latest app, acknowledge the problem, try to measure it so as to get some sense of how bad it is, try to solve it and finally measure your difference in productivity. And don’t forget, we all are different and just because some can manage their time better than other remember it’s not the end of the world. There should be always hoping for improvement.
