Have you ever thought who controls the Internet? Who controls DNS? Who has an authority to maintain all the websites and IP addresses on the Internet? These 7 people have control all over the Internet including Domain Name System (DNS) and IP address.
The Internet is the worldwide system of interconnected computer networks that use the Internet Protocol suite (TCP/IP) to link device all around the world.
It is a network of networks that combined of public, private, academic, business and Government networks of local to global scope, linked by a broad array of electronic, wireless and optical network technologies.
In the 21st century, the scope of Internet has widened multi-folds as it carries a vast range of information resources and services such as the applications, file sharing, etc.
For the origin of Internet, it is connected by thick optic fiber cables that have been laid down beneath the oceans by Telecommunications Company like Docomo, etc.
As we know, owners of the internet cannot be one or two person or organization as it is a network formed when computers to computers connected together.
But what if we say actually the control of the internet is in the hands of 7 people. Tough to believe this, right? Don’t think much, we will tell you how.
Today we are mentioning about Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) which is an organization responsible for the control of the internet. It is a non-profit organization headquartered in the United States of America.
What does ICANN do?
ICANN is the maintainer organization that controls and directs Internet Protocol address and Domain Name System (DNS).
It allows Domain Name for the websites and IP address, as well as the computers, laptops, Mobiles and every other device from which you can access the internet.
For instance, any website in a server is stored in the numeric form like, 128 420 321 like an Internet Protocols which is connected to the names of the website. The process of converting numbers into the names in the website is known as root.
In basic terms, ICANN is responsible to maintain DNS and if there is any problem with it or someone tries to hack the system, then the whole internet network will come to halt. The whole control of the Internet is in the hands of ICANN.
How does ICANN maintain DNS and other related activities?
ICANN adopted an amazing highly confidential way of its operations. ICANN, in order to maintain the whole Domain Name System comprising of millions and millions of websites, holds a ceremony four times in a year.
In the ceremonies, there is the exchange of encryption keys of the database of ICANN.
There is ICANN database which records information about what number is assigned to which website.
For instance, 121.231.432.234 is assigned to Techapprise.com, but it this number is changed and put another number, 234.234.322.316, then the users will be always redirected to the different website whenever a person enters the changed number in place what is originally assigned to the website.
The database of ICANN is storing highly confidential and important data, therefore the security levels in the operation of ICANN should be at par with it. As a result, there are security keys to access the e-database of ICANN, which is not in the hands of one person or any particular department because there is the high chance of getting errors in accessing the database in case the person dies or lost his keys, the whole internet would get locked.
To curb this situation, ICANN assigned total 7 people all over the world in the Internet community, provided them 7 encryption keys and 7 recovery keys to the different person as well to access the database.
These are encryption keys printed on the paper and also smart cards have been allotted. Four times a year, there is a key ceremony to be held, where they all gather and new keys have been generated and again assigned to them in case the previous key got into the knowledge of any other person.
Until and unless all the keys or some specified number of keys attached together, the database doesn’t open at all, that’s the level of security presence there. There are lockers where key documents have been stored which are of class – 5 level security designed and developed by CIA and FBI. After the new key has been allowed they return back to their place. That’s the whole working process of ICANN in terms of maintaining the DNS and IP addresses.
